A National Historic Site of Canada, The Gardens is a 55acre display garden attracting over a million visitors from around the world. Enveloping you in lush greens and colourful blooms, The Butchart Gardens is a must-see oasis over 100 years in the making.
With a former limestone quarry for her backyard, Jennie Butchart envisioned landscaping a sunken garden in its place, transforming the property for her family—and visitors—for generations to come.
While the outdoor gardens sleep, the indoor gardens come to life. Step inside the Spring Prelude, and stroll along the flagstone pathways while breathing in the subtle fragrance of flowering shrubs and flowers. Beds of daffodils and tulips bloom alongside tropical plants and orchids creating a fantasy garden. Flowering cherry, witch hazel, and other flowering shrubs provide a backdrop to a footbridge where goldfish gracefully and serenely swim beneath.
Inside the former Butchart family residence, Benvenuto, you’ll find curated displays of memorabilia that chronicle The Garden’s history, from its days as a limestone quarry to today. From room to room, you’ll see original furnishings, letters and photographs from the early 1900s.
